The Maize Adaptive and Innovative Solutions (MAIS) project
In the six-year Maize Adaptive and Innovative Solutions (MAIS) project, Papyrus and its partners worked to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farm families through expanded commercialization and environmentally sustainable production of maize and bean.
MAIS changed the lives of women and youth in rural communities by improving capacity through agricultural education, providing small grants, and increasing market access. Project activities were focused on select communes in the South department of Haiti and emphasized the importance of supporting and identifying opportunities for women and youth. All activities were designed to promote added value and climate change adaptation in targeted value chains.
The MAIS project pioneered the Ayiti-Soudé platform that brings together many civil society sectors to discuss issues and propose solutions which are aligned with local conditions and values. The platform was also replicated in the north of Haiti.
